New Practical Nursing Diploma Program Available in Ohio

Herzing University has developed a new practical nursing program that will train students to become licensed practical nurses (LPNs). The 12-month diploma program at the Akron, Ohio campus is expected to help fill a significant workforce need in the region, according to the university.

The program will feature a nursing skills lab, a simulation lab, and required clinical experiences, which will all provide hands-on learning. Students will also receive classroom instruction from experienced nursing leaders. Once the program is complete, students will be prepared to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN).

"The healthcare sector continues to be the top employer in Northeast Ohio, and our new LPN program makes it easier to get started in this growing field," said Herzing-Akron Campus President Bill Cassidy, in a statement. "These new LPNs will help our healthcare partners address staffing needs at skilled nursing facilities, physician's offices, and hospitals."

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Ohio is 1 of 5 states with the highest level of employment for licensed practical and licensed vocational nurses. Nationally, the agency predicts employment for LPNs to increase by as much as 12% through 2026.

"It makes sense for us to continue to expand and invest in our nursing programs, especially as our population ages, and health management needs amplify," Cassidy said in a statement.

Registration for the new program is open. The practical nursing diploma program will launch Sept. 5, and the nursing skills lab is expected to open in 2019.

In addition to theerzing's Akron campus offers an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing degree, which trains students to become registered nurses, and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing program. The university also offers programs in other nursing and healthcare specialties, including an online Master of Science in Nursing degree, and post-graduate certificate programs.
