High Fiber Foods Can Assist in Colon Health

Published Online: Monday, April 16th, 2018
Colorectal cancer is 1 of the most common types of cancer diagnosed in the United States, for both men and women. The American Cancer Society projects more than 97,000 new cases of colon cancer for 2018 and more than 43,000 new cases of rectal cancer.

In terms of screening methods, health agencies recommend patients getting a periodic colonoscopy, starting at age 50. Meanwhile, a high-fiber diet can help maintain a healthy colon and digestive system.

Dietary fibers can be soluble or insoluble. Both are non-starch complex carbohydrates found in plant foods, and each type has unique benefits for helping prevent colon cancer. Soluble fiber consumption is known to lower blood cholesterol and glucose levels, while insoluble fiber promotes bowel movements.
